2004 - Another personal project that took place concurrently with the kitchen countertop project. I figured as long as I was experimenting in the kitchen I may as well experiment in the guest bath!
Rather than constructing a form and pouring the countertop in place as I did in the kitchen, I built a mold and poured this countertop upside down. The advantage to this technique is that the smooth finish of the melamine mold gives the countertop an equally smooth finish with only a bit of polishing and waxing needed. I wanted to leave small voids in the surface that I could later back-fill with a slurry of a different color to give it interest so I didn't vibrate the concrete after pouring, just tapped the form a bit with a mallet.
Although the countertop is small in size, it weighs almost 400 pounds. The cabinets require reinforcement and four hands were needed to lift and position it.
If I were to do it again I would use the sealing system I used on the Marshal countertop project. The sealant used on this guest bath project has allowed it to be slightly bleached by the overspray of laundry stain removers. Refinishing it is on my project TODO list.
